Sitting for a long time? Sit right.

A Malmstol is one of the best chairs you can sit in. Use it right and you will get the full benefits of its ergonomic features. Adapt the workplace to suit your needs, not vice versa.

Remember to:

Sit near the back of the seat.
This keeps your back straight, and the backrest provides support and relief where it should. Make sure that your seat cushion is not too far out causing you to miss the benefits of the backrest.
Sit at a comfortable height in relation to the floor, not too high.
You should be able to sit quite close to the backrest and slightly reclined, and reach the floor with your feet in order to create the right balance in the chair and relieve the pressure on your thighs.
Adapt the desk height to suit your needs, not vice versa.
You should not have to lift your shoulders to reach the desk. A desk that is too low tends to make you hang forwards too easily.
Change work posture frequently without changing any settings on the chair.
Do not lock the chair unless you absolutely have to, but let it follow your movements.

Small changes at your workstation can make big differences.

Sit slightly reclined (about 105 degrees), to assume a position midway between upright/leaning forward and the most reclined position. This is the position that the majority of people feel is most comfortable, regardless of the type of chair. The position is stable and relieves your body weight against the chair. Our chair backs are made to follow the shape of your back. Sitting upright is tiring in the long run, and you tend to collapse easily after a while.

This is not a static work posture, but is a good starting position to adapt your workstation from:

  • Adjust the desk height and the distance to the desk to ensure your arms and shoulders assume a natural and relaxed posture.
  • Place the keyboard, mouse or other device on your desk to ensure your arms do not need to be stretched nor rotated outwards.
  • The height of the screen is adjusted to ensure your vision falls naturally in line with the top third of the screen. Your workstation now has a good basic position. 

Basic settings for your chair – Movie 1

The film shows how to make the basic settings for your Malmstol.

  1. Let the chair have a slightly leaning backwards position; your body will now rest better against the chair.
  2. Move as far back on the seat as possible. Your hips and lower back will now enjoy good support.
  3. Raise the chair to a good working level. You must be able to sit completely flush with the backrest with your backside and still reach the floor with your feet without experiencing pressure on the bottom of your thighs.
  4. Move closer to your desk ensuring your forearms are well supported.
  5. Release the knee-tilt mechanism to allow the chair to follow you in the small movements which occur the whole time during your work.
  6. When you vary between backward and forward leaning sitting positions, roll the chair forwards/backwards as per the films below.

Working leaning forwards – Movie 2

In a forward-leaning posture, your shoulders are pushed upwards. This causes tension in your neck and shoulders. Move your chair slightly backwards instead until your shoulders sink down to a normal position.

Working leaning backwards – Movie 3

If you lean back, your arms will be stretched out and your forearms lose the support they had from the desk. Move the chair closer to the desk until your arms once again are supported comfortably.

Your body needs to move – Movie 4

Use telephone conversations and other breaks to move vigorously back and forth on your chair. This is both relaxing and has a positive effect on your blood circulation. The Malmstolen chair gives you freedom of movement, for a long time.
